Network testing is an essential part of a quality network. Both new and existing networks can benefit from testing. When installing a new network some specifications do not require that the new connections be fully tested. It is possible to hook a computer to an improperly wired network cable and get a “green light” connection and be able to pass data.  The problems may not show up until you try to increase to higher network speeds.  Proper cable testing can eliminate these concerns and give you documentation to prove that your network will meet your specifications.

Some specifications require that the installing contractor test the cable after they complete the installation. Does this sound like a conflict of interest?  Is your contractor reputable enough to tell you when he has installed a bad batch of cable?  Or when his technicians have improperly terminated the patch panels and the cable will not pass the required tests?  Test reports are computer generated documents and could be altered.  Hopefully a reputable contractor would not intentionally alter test reports, but how can you know for sure?

Existing systems change over time due to intentional changes such as adds and moves.  There are also unintentional changes due to building modifications such as adding light fixtures, new walls, new ductwork, etc.  All of these things can have a negative impact on your network performance.

How can you be sure that your contractor provided accurate test results or that your existing network is still operating at the same performance level as when it was installed? The only way to know for sure is with an independent test.
